Circular logic

I think I like the idea of this video “Back to Me” by Joel Compass more than the execution. It uses a montage of cinemagraphs – photographs in which selected areas are animated – which is the first time I’ve seen them used in a video.

It’s just a pity that the story is a bit overblown:

Tommy gun

Ho Yan (Howie) Tsui, a Canadian visual artist, was asked to create a new medical-themed work for an exhibition on the bicentennial of the War of 1812.

As part of his research into the horrors of battlefield surgery, he discovered that when a musket ball enters the body it doesn’t have the kinetic energy to escape and pings around inside the body. Therefore…musketball pinball.

I really like this. It’s a clever idea, born of a genuine insight, beautifully executed, and educates without being preachy. Plus it’s score lights spell out ‘mangled viscera‘. Gnarly:

Claire Fontaine is a French artist who makes maps of countries out of matches, then sets them on fire. Probably something to do youth unemployment or somthing. It’s quite cool when it works…

…but it’s way more fun when it goes wrong. A map of the States she made Portland Institute of Contemporary Art promptly burnt down the ceiling of the gallery, forcing everyone to evacuate.
